I want to know if they can be because I read an article online called Gifted but Disabled and it sounds a lot like me. I have labeled as LD and my weaknesses are math and science but I am excellent in english, writing, and socail studies, unfortuneatly there are people saying that I am not gifted and they’re even sying that I can’t go to college and to be honest I’m kind of jealous of the people who have been labeled as gifted or been in talented and gifted programs so I need help! Is it possible for disabled people to be gifted and I can still be gifted even if I wasn’t labeled as it?

If you are Disabled, you can still be gifted at something. Don’t listen to the people who say you cant go to College. The only one who will decide if you go to College is you. Just because your bad at a couple of things doesn’t mean your never going to achieve something greater than the norm. To say that someone who is disabled cant be Gifted is not really based on fact. It’s a persons narrow minded opinion.

Sure you are gifted, we all are. It might take some time to find out what your gift is but you sure are to have a gift at something. Some people who are disabled are disabled let their gift show more because they are more passionate about what they do. Search your soul you ought to find a visible gift, be passionate on what you do. Care more about what you have and can do than worry about what you can’t.

Of course, every individual is unique. I remember someone who has autism graduated at college being their cum laude. There was also a famous scientist who even dropped out of high school. Disabilities can never hinder ones dreams and passions. Even if you have an LD, you can learn by concentrating more on your weakness and constant improvement on your strengths. We evolve and our minds and the way we think also evolve.

Absolutely you can be gifted. I would definitely consider myself to be gifted, but I also have dyslexia, dyscalula, and dysgraphia. I am deaf, and I am physically disabled. Giftedness is simple something about you that along the continuum you are at the upper end. If there are 100 people and you lined them up from the worst to the best - some would have to be the best - often thought of as gifted. Nothing prevents a person with any disability to be gifted. I consider my son who has Down syndrome to be gifted in several ways - as do most people who know him. Giftedness doesn’t recognize disability as a hindrance.

Absolutely. I’ve known brilliant people with ADD for example.

One of the best writers I ever knew had partial brain damage that left her mystified by spatial relationships to where she could get lost in her own neighborhood.

Don’t let anyone discourage you from achieving all you can.

believe it or not, everyone of us are “gifted” in one way or another.
We may not have opened ourselves up to expressing our gift
but give it time, it will open up. When it does, if you choose to use it wisely, and with openness for another to gain the beauty from that gift, many positive things will ocurr.
enjoy your gift, and explore the possibilities

Sure it is possible, I have CNM another form of M. dystrophy and I have obtained my AABA (Associates degree in business admin. and trying to go for my bachelors degree (BBA or going to medical transcription school) here soon. I carried a GPA of 3.5 through graduation.

Just because someone is limited in a physical sense does not always mean they are totally incompetent in life. I certainly would not be able to become a math wiz but, I believe everyone has their own talents. Let yours shine and prove that you CAN and WILL do it - good luck in your future endeavors!!

yes it it. i have a family member who is severely mentally handicapped and they cannot write, read or even speak properly. however they are AMAZING at art and they are so creative. they can make the most amazing things. it is certainly possible, just because their minds work differently does not make them any less able to be good at certain things.

It is possible to have good skills in one area and a weakness in another and people with disabilities can be academically gifted. Do not be jealous of students who posses more skill or have had more opportunity than you, it is a waste of energy. Push yourself to reach your own goals. There are many people with learning disabilities who go on to college and have successful lives. As for being gifted, it doesn’t mean anything in the real world anyway, so do not stress over that label or any other. You are probably much stronger in verbal skills, but your spelling needs work, as does your sentence structure. If you like English and writing, spend some time polishing these skills and pursue a course of study that fits your interests.

My IQ is 137 and I did terrible in math and science but excelled in English, writing, social studies, and history. My college GPA is 3.83 but I could never pass beginning algebra. I am a professionally published author (not vanity press). Your learning disability is NOT reflective of your IQ or your ability to succeed in life!

You do not need to be gifted to be a success. Those who are labeled such don’t necessarily go on to do anything extraordinary with their lives.

My daughter was in special ed part of the day from 1st grade thru 4th grade. Today she is the owner of a very successful business - with 15 assistants.

If that isn’t grand enough know these:

Albert Einstein failed 2nd or 3rd grade (I forget which).

Nelson Rockefeller had difficulty reading. If you’re too young to remember him, he was an extremely wealthy man and also ran for vice-president. Do you see pics of the huge NYC Christmas tree when they light it every year? It is put in Rockefeller Center.

Be kind to, and accepting of yourself, do your best, and you will do just fine.

P.S. The brain doesn’t stop growing until one is 20+.

yes-it’s often referred to as twice gifted-

could be spina bifuda +gifted

or LD (dyslexia) + gifted (highly intellectual even though difficult to read)

etc…

You are human, and god made you perfect for a purpose. You may teach many people in life and learn like any others. You can become a genius and **** THOSE DAMN PEOPLE. You don’t listen to them, you can excel far beyond them if you wanted to. I honestly skate every day and i have asthma like no one else does. I have to carry a machine every were i go and I’ve lost my arm… but I don’t listen to people that bring me down I look up at my friends that actually care for me. When i lost my favorite arm my life turned.. i lost friends and people thought i freaked them out! But today I’m a leader, I have friends and I can skate. All it took was independance. Find your skills in life and sow them off, be proud of the gifts you have or can obtain. I’m only 13 and I’ve whent through hell but now i can shine. Take care and find your purpose to be a leader, Chris.

There are many different kinds of LD. I don’t know how LD affects you, so whether you can handle college or not, IDK. But I found out in college that I had an LD. There were a lot of resources available on campus (for all kinds of disabilities including LD) and I ended up graduating with a double major…one of them being Math! So don’t let it discourage you, there is support available for college. And yes, you can be gifted as it’s defined by psychologists, or at least pretty close.

Yes, I don’t know who is telling you you can’t go to collage. But, don’t you believe them. As a matter of fact the Arizona State Universary (ASU) in Tempe, Arizona has a program for LD.
We all learn differently. Some of us are visual, we learn mostly through our eyes.
Some of us learn by hearing.
Some of us learn through our sense of touch, we need to experience our learning by doing.
You have strong areas which have many many opprotunities for a career.
Believe in yourself.
