I’m just beneath obesity, and I was wondering, if I am financially able, if I could opt to have the surgery done to keep weight off and disable my binging (and purging). It seems stupid, I know, that I’d be willing to pay so much for a medical restriction on my disorder - but give me a straight answer, please. Is it a legal matter, or finding a surgeon who’s willing to, or..?

You know what? Even if a surgeon would do this (which is not going to happen) it wouldn’t solve your problems. You have a psychological disorder called bulimia. It would not stop the disease. You would do the same thing after the surgery. You need to see a therapist/counselor. Once you learn different ways to deal with your emotions, the weight will start coming off on it’s own.

it has to be a health related problem for a Dr to be willing to do that type of surgery

Most good surgeons would never consider taking your case.

I don’t want to lecture you. It sounds like you need help. Why don’t you do it the right way and get help for your eating disorder? Come on — you’re worth it. Seek help instead of trying to get this procedure. First of all, the only surgeon that would help you, if you are not morbidly obese and you have a eating disorder would be a quack. Would you really want a quack working on you? I wouldn’t.

I don’t think it would cure you of binging and purging. Try some counseling first for the binging & purging. It’s a lot less invasive than surgery. Maybe you can get to the root of the eating disorder and on to a healthier way of life.
Good Luck.
Maybe there are support groups near you who also could lend support?

if you ask me, i think you need to see a doctor or psychiatrist on your eating disorder first before you go thinking about any surgery. no descent doctor will perform any surgery when the patient is not stable in any way. evidentally if your binging and purging your body is not healthy enough for any surgery!!

I think that it is a “medical regulation” that you have to be morbidly obese and other methods failed. A reputable surgeon will want to follow the medical policy on it, or he will lose his license. Bariatric surgery is recommended only for the obese because it is a risky and extreme procedure, and, as with all medical procedures is only worth it when the benefits outweight the risk. This is only true for the obese (not you.)

I’ve heard of people who then gain weight in order to qualify for the surgery, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Its not just the financial expense. Recovery from bariatric surgery HARD. I would recommend getting help to get your binging/purging cycle under control, and then beginning an exercise program. It may seem hard at first, but very quickly you will enjoy the benefits.

Before a bariatric surgery you need to pass for a psychiatric evaluation, I pass for it. It you have bulimic problem the surgery isn’t appropriated for you.
