Art fans, get ready for a stunner. The Albright-Knox art gallery in Buffalo has released many pieces of art to the public. The sales have exceeded $18 million in totals, despite many people trying to save the arts from the public’s hand.
Among the treasures were trinkets from the Shang dynasty, even one artifact selling for $8 million alone. A limestone chimera was bought for roughly $5.4 million. Other sales included Native American, African, and Roman arts. The museum was sad to see the collection go, but could not keep up with expenses while holding onto these valuables.
The money is going towards a fund that buys new works, directors said. Many members of the museum felt enraged about the plan. About ¼ of all the members disagreed with the decision, and tried bring the museum into court to stop the sale. However, the courts sided with the museum and OK’d the right to resume the sale.
Collectors from all around the world gave up millions of dollars for many artifacts, often some of them being extremely rare and valuable. If you aren’t able to afford such things- then you are out of luck. The pieces have gone into personal hands and will most likely not see a museum for many years- if at all.
The museum plans on making up for the losses with new art- something to look forward to for those who have upgraded their art styles to more of a contemporary liking. Now, the buyers are in a pickle- where do you put a $8 million artifact the size of a cookie jar?
