What are restrictions on painting and remodeling when pregnant?

brandiejs1979 asked: I want to start painting my house (inside) and I am trying to get pregnant, so I am worried about the fumes. Should I hurry up and finish this project before I get pregnant, or is it ok to paint when pregnant?

If you are not yet pregnant you don’t have to worry. If you think the painting will take a while, they do have fume-free paints, and paints that have no smell after 2 hours. You can go to any hardware store, or Fred Meyers and get painter’s masks to help block out fumes. I have been painting during this pregnancy, and painted while pregnant with my son with no problems.

BAD idea, for exactly the reason you stated. It can depend on the type of paint you are using, but it’s not worth the risk. The fumes can pose a health hazard to not only you, but your unborn too. If you absolutely have to have the painting done while pregnant, bring in a professional and stay with a friend until the paint is dry. Not all effects of environmental hazards that a mother was exposed to are obvious, like a cleft plate, but can be neurological too.

it’s advised to not paint while pregnant, however, my mom and dad remodeled our house throughout all of her pregnancies.
there are tons of pics of my mom with a painter’s mask on stripping a wall with paint thinner and other chemicals.

i’d ask you OB, when you get pregnant, what their advice is….that’s the best bet.

take care.

You can paint your house, but once you get pregnant it is advisable that you not be painting. I got pregnant while painting my house and had to stop when I found out. You need to have all the windows open so that the fumes do not build up in your house. Good Luck.

Most new interior latex paints are fine in moderation with proper ventilation…….especially if you aren’t pregnant yet. Make sure the room is well ventilated…after pregnancy is confirmed, don’t mess with paint strippers, paint thinners or oil based paints and primers…..
