Don't believe it, they do go away for some people, I know. I used to have them and started deep breathing, also reading at night helps calm your mind. A good book is the " the power of your subconscious mind" it helps you learn to control your thoughts. Believe in yourself, alot of panic attack sufferers are passive and don't say what they are feeling, learn to express yourself. I also started jogging, exercise helps too.
Stay away from the caffiene and the nicotine, just stimulates the epinephrine. Realize and accept you are doing this to yourself. It is hard but when I did this I was more in control to stop the attacks.
I was on some meds for a while but no more, I used to be on tranqulizers and sleeping pills to help me calm down but no longer need any of this.
Prayer is a great help, if you can't think of anything think of the simplist prayer and repeat it over and over until you feel the attack is passed. Meditation also helps calm the mind.
good luck and don't give up, you have the power to stop the attacks, I am more relaxed now than I have ever been. You will overcome these, mine lasted about 6 months, but improved over time.

I have suffered from PA's for over 10 years until I found what really works and what doesn't.

First, Xanax and other benzodiazepines DO NOT eliminate panic attacks. They temporarily halt them, but they are guaranteed to return. Plus, they are incredibly addictive and hard to get off. SSRI's DO help, but I wouldn't rely on them long term (many years).

The only thing that has eliminated my panic attacks is to find a good Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. The theory of CBT is that your thoughts cause your feelings, and by learning to control how you think and respond to your thoughts, you can control how you feel. It sounds vvery simple, and I did not believe it would work for me, but it did.

With meds, particularly sedatives, you are putting a band-aid on a gaping wound, and aren't allowing it to heal. What you must do in order to eliminate panic attacks is to go to the problem itself, and learn to PREVENT rather than TREAT the panic.

Believe me, I know the terrible pain you are going through, and I am so sorry anyone has to go through that. CBT is hard work, but it will give you the tools to prevent panic and to get off your meds and start living your life.

Oh, and you may want to do an Internet search on "thought records" and start doing some. Or pick up Mind Over Mood by Greenberger and Padesky as well as The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook. Those 2 books were integral to my recovery!

Panic attacks don't usually go away completely. However, the more you feel 'in control' of your life and yourself, the more self-confidence you have in yourself, the lesser these will affect you. Panic attacks are when you tell yourself you can't deal with something life has put in your path. It's when you can feel confident and in control that you can say to yourself "so what, nothing I can't deal with".
Just taking a pill without dealing with the underlying problem causing the panic won't move you ahead the way you want.

Hope this makes sense:)

Here are some things I learned:

Realize that whatever you is making you panic is probably not that bad or life threatening - and that you telling yourself lies.

Think of a situation that is more pleasant and imagine all of the details and how that situation makes you feel.

Know that you are actually safe and that you can handle any situation.

Yes i know were your coming from totally irrational fear of facing the world, been there for over 30 years.I think a lot of it is down to confidence, i have found that self confidence Tapes or CDs help somewhat. But i have learned to accept what i have to live with and not to try and fight it.

Has your doctor remanded anti anxiety meds? Something like xanax? I have bad panic attacks. And I really don't know any real way to stop them. I know my Doctor said changing meds is one think I need to do. And he gave me xanax which has help some. I think as hard as it is you just have to keep going. Try new meds to one works. and just do it afraid. I have the same problem you do If I have to leave home I almost always panic. I have the light headedness about all the time now. I have had anxiety w/ panic for 8 years. And it did get better for a while, not gone but better. But now I am going Thur menopause and it is bad as bad as ever. I don't want to scare you if you find the right meds you can get much better.

they tend to never go away. You just have to learn how to control them when you feel the panic rising.

breath, pray, any time you think of something that scares you think of something good that you are thankful for, stay away from high energy drinks or energy pills if you take them. i get those attacks too and i know they arent fun. just work with yourself maybe see a doctor
