3 percent of adults carry the clostridium difficile bacterium in their bowel as normal. Overuse of certain antibiotics upset the natural balance of bacteria in the gut and so c.difficile thrives. It is infectious and is easily spread between patients. You can reduce the spread by washing your hands and changing gloves, aprons etc. if you are a healthcare worker. The symptoms are diahorrea, nausea, abdominal pain and fever.
