This winter break, I am planning on making a strong effort to lose weight. For all who are wondering, the break will be 6 weeks long.

Here is what I am planning to do:
-Eat a very reasonable diet.
-Take protein supplements.
-Drink lots of water.
-Ride my bike for an hour or two a day.
-Go to the gym Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and do some anaerobic exercise to build lean muscle.

Would this be unhealthy? I have a feeling I will lose weight rather quickly, but a friend told me that losing weight fast is almost as unhealthy as being overweight in the first place. Is my plan unreasonable?

Thoughts?

After the initial couple of weeks, losing more than 3-4 pounds a week (unless you are very overweight) is going to start causing stress on your organs.

You sound like you’re on the right track. No lower than 1200 calories per day, lots of water, aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Don’t ride the scale, either. If you do that without fail, the weight will come off. Don’t live and die by the numbers.

If you lose the weight fast, you gain it back FAST. Take your time.

Sounds like a solid plan. Don’t weigh yourself every day and stress about how much you’re losing. In fact, you should only weigh your self once a week at the most. You might want to do some additional working out at home daily…simple stuff.

go to…www.personalhealthandwellness.com

they have a whole routine on the front page that you can do at home.

Start doing that before the break, start out slow, it will take a while for your body to get accustomed to all the changes. Starving yourself is just as bad as burning off all the calories you ate that day, just make sure you get 1200 calories a day, and ride your bike for an hour maybe, two seems a bit extreme for now, especially if you’re coming out of an inactive lifestyle. Your friend is right, just don’t go overboard with the exercising. If your body goes into starvation mode you could easily gain all the weight back as fast as you lost it. Good luck!

I don’t know how reasonable your plan is, but these are the things I know.
1) You should only loose 1-2 lbs a WEEK. so about 12 lbs in those six weeks.
2) Start your exercising slow, especially if you don’t normally do it.
3) Get AT LEAST 1200 calories a day.

1-2 lbs a week is a reasonable rate. You will find that you will lose more (5-6 lbs) the first week or so, then it will taper off.

Don’t overdo the workout; you’ll just wear yourself out. 1-2 hours on a bike per day is asking too much of your body for 6 weeks. Do 30 minutes in the morning and 30 more in the evening. Take a walk mid-day.

Do record your calorie intake (Fitday.com is a free tracking site!). Start recording now so you can see your typical intake. Since 1lb = 3500 calories, you will lose 1lb a week if you cut/burn 500 calories a day and 2lbs a week if you cut/burn 1000 calories a day. DO NOT go below 1200-1300 calories or you wont have any energy to work out!

You do not need protein supplements.

Good luck!

Why do women worry about their weight when they really don’t need to? That I’ll never figure out.
However, if you insist, I’ll throw in my twopenn’orth:-
I would certainly not take protein supplements
I would drink plenty of pure water
I would go easy on the gym and the cycling
I would eat plenty of fruits like bananas, oranges, and apples
