If you have any of the above reasons for varicose veins forming, take heart, you can make a difference in the health of your legs. There are many things that you can do to tip the scales in your favor. Here are just a few easy things that you can do that do not take any time.
> Watch what you eat: Reduce your sodium intake and increase your consumption of fiber by adding whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and bran cereals to your diet.
> Be wary of tight fitting clothing as this can increase pressure on your legs. Make sure that you clothing is loose especially around your waist, groin area and your legs. It is important to wear elastic support stockings.
> Make sure you exercise your legs especially if you have a sedentary job or are on your feet a lot at work or at home. Go for walks during the day on breaks and during your lunchtime. While you are sitting do exercises with your feet and legs by rotating the feet, lifting the legs and bending them at the knees. Swimming is great exercise for your legs, so is walking the dog, or bowling. You can also exercise your legs by walking around the golf course. Choose the stairs instead of the elevator. Your legs will thank you by staying healthy.
Taking care of your legs:
Whenever you can, take a rest break by elevating your legs. Whenever you do have to stand for any length of time, try shifting your weight from one leg and then to the other leg.
Move as much as possible when you are required to sit for long periods of time like when you are in class or in a conference meeting. Ask for breaks so you can get up and stretch or walk around for a bit. Don’t forget to move your legs while seated for long periods of time by rotating your feet or pumping your legs.
It is important to achieve the proper weight for your height and age. Being overweight will put pressure on your legs. Ask your doctor what your ideal weight is and then ask for tips on how to achieve that weight. Ask for dietary guidelines, exercise programs or support groups that you can join.
