Some years ago, a news story stated that a deaf lesbian couple wanted to have a baby. To make sure that the baby was born deaf, they used sperm from a congenitally deaf man to conceive the baby.

They succeeded and the baby was born deaf.

Do you think that their actions (please ignore the issue of two women having a baby) to almost certainly bear a deaf baby were correct? Were they justified?

I believe their motivation was to have a baby that would become a part of the larger deaf community.

Please note that everything they did was legal.

Your thoughts would be appreciated because this issue has bothered me for some time.

Why purposely make it so your child has a harder life? Seems wrong to me, but hey, it’s their kid.

Being Deaf (despite popular Deaf opinion) is a Disability. Why would a loving couple purposely inflict a disability onto a helpless child? It sounds like for their own selfish reasons.
And to those who say being Deaf is not a disability; tell me why they receive Disability checks? I live in the 2nd highest Deaf population in the USA; work in the Deaf Community; know ASL & have Deaf friends.

I think there is something wrong with parents who want their child to be limited- in any way. As a person who can hear well, I want my child to be able to hear even better. I also want my child to be healthier, wealthier and wiser than I am.

NO it was not right. And they have taken something from their child that was not theirs to take. To my mind its as nasty as cutting away a piece of a boys penis….Its insane and selfish. What about enjoying music as hearing people do? And what about the sounds of nature?….and many other things….not all taken for granted….They ripped that child off!

And its not their kid..we dont own our kids like some item we brought from the local store….they are a gift and doing something like that to them is not treating them with love.
