Video Games: Eyesight for Better or Worse?
How many times have you been playing your favorite video game, only to have a parent or friend sneer at you for wasting your time? Research claims that those who play video games will have much better eyesight than those who don’t.
Fast, action packed games like “Halo” or “Gears of War” can improve your eyesight- not games such as Tetris. The test was given to a few willing participants, who underwent a ‘training’ session with games. After the game play, they were asked to find objects in a cluttered picture- and showed a substantial proficiency in finding the object than non-gamers.
The most common effect from the game playing is spatial resolution, meaning the ability to see small, tightly packed objects. The human ocular system’s health is largely based on the lens and cornea, so don’t expect to improve your vision too much from playing video games.
Problems such as lazy eye would see a good treatment in video games, researchers said. The new Nintendo Wii has been reportedly beneficial to stroke victims as well. Although the findings are somewhat impressive, it is most likely you won’t get away with playing video games on the sole excuse of improving your spatial resolution anytime soon.
