S.T. asked:

My son had a hearing test done at birth, they are required in the state that I live in.
The 1st test they gave him they said that he failed by a small margine in one ear. So, they retested 1 hour later and then said that he failed in both ears.
They suggested that we retest in a week.
So, that is what we are going to do. They told us that sometimes there is wax or fluid from the birth in there and that is why they fail, and sometimes it is a hearing loss problem.

My question is has anyone else had a similar experience? and if so, was your baby o.k. later, or what was the out come?

I think my baby can hear, he seems to jump if he hears a loud noise and he looks when someone talks, so I don’t know what to think, I am worried he might be tone deaf or something, and maybe that is why he is failing the test, but acting as if he can hear loud noises.

Thank You for your help.
My son is 4 days old

sometimes babies can fail for a number of reasons, one of which is being in a over stimulated environment with lots of noise.

both my children have had hearing tests and they have both needed 2 different methods done as the 1st didnt show positive results.

I wouldnt worry about it, it could just be your baby not ‘performing’ and the next test will be a lot more positive. It may of had some gunk from when he was born

Its very common for them to fail the tests in the hospital. I don’t even know why they give it in the hospital its so common. I mean really it scares us mothers half to death! 3 weeks ago my daughter failed her hearing screen (with her left ear) while in the hospital. Actually she failed it 4 times during our time at the hospital. We were referred to an audiotologist for a follow up a 2 weeks after her birth and she passed with both. Vernix can be clogging the babies ears causing them to fail.

I think your baby will be fine. Best wishes and good luck to you.

A close friend of my family became deaf at 5. He is an adult now with 7 kids, is a great guy , very sociable and is liked by all. He reads lips and you would be inspired by him. If he turns out to be deaf, he is only as limited as you make him. So dont stress it just take it as it comes.
I think he will be fine either way.

my daughter had one at about 8 weeks that she failed. They said it could be because they couldnt get the plugs in her ears properly cos the ears are too small. They said also if she had a cold that could affect it. We had another one done 2 months later and everything was fine.

i personally think those hospital tests are a joke.

the biggest majority of them are NOT accurate. because most babies have fluid in their ears from being in the womb for the better part of the first month.

my son also got tested at birth, six times. and he repeatedly failed in his left ear [which he had peed into right before they did it, lol] and a couple times he had the hiccups and failed both ears.

the machines are very sensitive to the slightest movement or noise, and truly unless the baby is a very calm sleeper, the test wouldnt be 100% accurate, and even then i dont think itd we 100%.

i had to take my son to a specialist 2 hours from where i live, to get him tested when he was around 3 weeks old. spent 7 hours and close to 9,000 dollars [thank heavens for insurance], just for them to ask me, does he startle when a loud noise is made, does he make noises (ie crying), “obviously yeahh”, well okay he must of just had fluid in his ears, he hears fine, bring him back when hes 3 months to be certain because his ears will be more developed then. [ i never took him back, because it was a waste of time, i would of if i thought there was a problem]

i was amazed and the pointlessness of the whole thing! lol
but i was very thankful he could hear just fine!!

if he jumps & startles when a loud noise is made he can hear fine! he may have a variation of hearing from one ear to the other, but i wouldnt worry too much, he seems fine from what you say!

my son is now 5 months old, and babbles up a storm, and wakes & startles to the slightest noise!!
