Social Dispute: The Death Penalty
Society today believes it is just to put someone to death, based on actions he or she has committed. For thousands of years, the death penalty has been used in various ways as a means of punishment. As civilization evolved, people now ask the question, is it just? And more importantly, does capital punishment even work?
Today, many criminals on death row actually die of ‘natural causes’ before being put to death. The appeals system can take many years, making death row a tax payer’s nightmare. They get complete meals, healthcare, and in many cases have privileges such as playing instruments, watching television, or playing games.
The death penalty is supposed to make criminals think twice about committing a crime- yet crime is on the rise. Perhaps, criminals aren’t scared of being treated so nicely while waiting many years to die- with odds of them dying naturally.
Some people say innocent people receive the death penalty, and this is incredibly wrong. This is true, but technology has helped lower the probability. For those who believe in the death penalty, many are having a change of heart after seeing the treatment criminals who committed horrible crimes are getting.
Still, the issue is a heated debate among many people. Some states have abolished it, but there are still a few holding out. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
