Since Labour took office there have been ten successive council tax rises. The latest rise is smaller than some of the previous ones, but it is felt by some that this is because of the impending elections in May of this year when Gordon Brown is expected to take over from Tony Blair. It is expected that any rise the following year will be much steeper. Counil tax has increased by more than 90% since Tony Blair became Prime Minister, increasing annual bills from £688 to a whopping £1,315. Councils have said that to reduce tax they would have to cut social services, sports facilities and library services.
