Side effects of Heparin flush?

narc_an asked: Is it technically correct to assume side effects can happen for a 10-100 unit IV line flush with Heparin? Or is this amount too minute to cause ANY side effects common to Heparin drug administration for DVT prophylaxis.

It might have side effects otherwise people wouldn’t be told to watch out for unusual bleeding.

I googled this. I have used this in my work over the years an dhavent seen any problems Nevertheless a flush soultion is not used to treat DVT ’s or for prophylaxis as far as I am aware, rather a therapeutic dose would need to be given SQ or IV-.The flush solution is to maintain IV patency, though more often a simple saline solution is used for that purpose.Someone who works more in a CCU or ICU may have some more info…but thats my experience.

Theoretically, side effects can happen with just about any dose of a medication (just ask a homeopath!). So yes, it is technically correct.

In practicality, that is such a small dose that it is very unlikely that you would have any significant reaction, with a few exceptions. The most critical is if you have a condition called “heparin induced thrombocytopenia” or HIT. This is an immunologically mediated reaction that causes a severe and dangerous drop in the circulating platelet levels. Heparin and heparin coated devices/catheters must be avoided at all times.

In the last decade, probably due to HIT and the lack of evidence that is it better, normal IVs and even most central lines are flushed with saline rather than heparin. The common exceptions are dialysis catheters, indwelling med-ports, and PICC (peripherally inserted central caths) lines, basically anything that is critical and must remain in place for a long time.
