Each birthday month has a governing zodiac sign and symbolic gemstone. Flowers of the months also denote birthdays and have historical and cultural meanings. Choosing such flowers as gifts show a great deal of thought has gone into the gesture. It’s also a guide as to what is in season.

The year begins with two January flowers. Carnations represent love, affection and admiration. Green varieties are given on St. Patrick’s Day. The other flower for the first month is the snowdrop, a hopeful sight for the spring to come. February brings the iris, standing for friendship, faith and hope and also the violet. One of the delights of March is the daffodil that pops through and brightens the gray after winter. They symbolize respect, faithfulness and modesty. Flowers of the months for April are the humble daisy, denoting good luck and pleasure, and the wonderfully scented sweet pea.

Warmer weather in May brings the lily, for purity, sweetness and meekness. Love and beauty are naturally represented by the rose in June. Different shades symbolize different qualities. The Larkspur is the flower for July, standing for laughter and relaxation. This bloom was used to keep witches at bay in Transylvania. August is the month for gladiolus and poppy. Gladiators adopted the gladiolus, representing strong character and the poppy is associated with remembering the war dead.

The fall and September brings the aster flower for love, faith and wisdom and the morning glory, which represents vibrancy and awareness. The aster is also a traditional flower of mourning for soldiers. October flowers of the months are the marigold, symbolizing affection and the cosmos, which stands for peace and modesty. There are chocolate cosmos flowers that really do have a chocolate scent. The chrysanthemum is the flower for November, meaning optimism, cheerfulness and wealth. Some people drink Chrysanthemum Tea in Asia.

Finally, December brings the poinsettia and narcissus. The poinsettia stands for celebration, success and good cheer. It is aptly known as the Christmas Star and is a popular decoration in homes at the festive season. Narcissus represents self-admiration, sweetness and egotism. The Greek myth is well known and tells of Narcissus who falls in love with his reflection in the stream. He stays there and turns into a flower. The flowers of the months don’t have to be strictly adhered to. They are fun to learn about and may shed light on some of the birth month traditions.

Everyone loves candles, the soft light they give and the relaxing atmosphere they create. Floating Candle Bowls have become very popular of late and the product range available is varied. They come in all sorts of colors, shapes and sizes and with differently scented candles. They are ideal for water features in the garden and can be matched to many special occasions.

Candlelight can be romantic, shared by couples on a moonlit evening or they can be festive and a talking point at parties and barbecues. Different kinds of Floating Candle Bowls will set different moods and reflect the personality of the host. Some candles will burn for four or five hours. Bowls with gold and silver candles are popular at Christmas and wedding celebrations. White Heart candles are a favorite for Valentine’s Day and for Wedding Anniversary’s.

Some candles are fun and some are elegant and there are choices for both. Some of the most popular candle sets include ivory, vanilla orchids, rose petals, golden daffodil, banana crème and cool crocus. The Daisy Water Candle gift set contains small plastic bowls in the shape of daisies, wicks, floating bowls and lighting tapers. The large floating candles shaped in lily bowls come in blue, magenta, turquoise, yellow or violet. There are also floating candle bowls in the form of half lemons or half limes and scented with the fruit.

There is a scent for everyone and some gift packs include six or eight different kinds. Popular ones include strawberry, cinnamon, sweet lavender, hyacinth, summer garden, musk, cherry plum, apricot marmalade and jade green. Glass bowls are well crafted and some have intricate, swirling patterns etched into the glass. Some floating candle bowls have clear glass, some are colored in dramatic shades of purple and violet and some are white, frosted glass. There are clear glass bowls with frosted glass chips and bowls with white icicles or snowflakes. Some have glitter or have gold or pearl bands.

Several designs use beads or nuggets to fill the bowl and form a base for the candle to sit. These glass beads and nuggets may be gold, pearl, rose, amethyst, peach, lilac or blue. Others contain artificial roses or selections of pot pourri. An aluminum boat can also be used as a centerpiece for table decoration. Some bowls are just the right shape and size to place T lights in them. The various scents, colors and themes will add something special to any setting.

When my friend gave me a flannel sheet set for my birthday I was a little surprised. I wasn’t really caught off guard by the thoughtful gift especially considering that I have always wanted a set. I was surprised to get the flannel sheet set because my birthday is in July.

The last thing anyone expects for a summer birthday is a set of flannel sheets. Even though the gift was really great I couldn’t conceal my surprise at the unusual summer gift. My friend insisted that I try the flannel sheet set right away in spite of the warm temperatures.

Of course, I couldn’t wait to try them but I was a little apprehensive since they are usually used in the cold months. I opened the package containing the flannel sheet set and this prompted me to immediately put them on my bed. I was really impressed with the soft fabric and I didn’t care how hot it was.

Good thing that I have air conditioning. The amazingly soft flannel sheet set is warm but it was comfy even in July. That is when the air conditioning is running. I kept the room really cool in order to try out the new flannel sheet set. I’m glad that I did because I had a great, comfy night’s sleep.

This set makes me want winter to come quickly. I just hope that I can muster up the willpower to get out of bed when it’s colder outside. It is going to be very hard to remove myself from these snuggly sheets this winter. I even wanted to stay in bed longer when I first tried them out.

The great thing about the flannel sheet set is that my friend chose a product of the finest quality. I have owned other flannel sheets in the past and they do have a tendency to make little clusters of fabric where it is worn. These pills are really annoying and they destroy the texture of the otherwise soft fabric.

I don’t have to worry about this product pilling at all. This flannel sheet set is durable and soft no matter how often I was the set. I know that these sheets will be with me for the long haul. There is little need for me to get another flannel sheet set because I immediately wash them after I undress the bed.

There is nothing more luxurious than warm flannel sheet right out of the drier and this is especially true on cold winter nights. I don’t use the flannel sheet set during the summer months but there are times that I am tempted to just to remember how nice it is to curl up in them during the winter.

There is definitely something elegant and cozy that fire places add to almost any home. They are a great addition, but they are also a lot of work. Many don’t take that into consideration when they have them installed or when they buy a house that is full of them. If you don’t end up using them, you have to have them covered up. If you do use them, they require maintenance. If you don’t do anything at all with them, they can cost you money on your energy bills due to a loss of heat and drafting issues.

When you actively use your fire places, you have to remember to keep them clean. They can be a fire hazard as well, and that means you have to have someone come in to check and clean your chimney at least once a year if not more. You have to keep the ashes cleaned out, and it will add a certain aroma to your home that you may or may not like. If you don’t mind all of those things, you certainly should have fire places if you want to. However, don’t use them but ignore the upkeep or you could be putting your home in danger of burning down.

If you ignore your fire places and are not using them, you may find that you have a draft in the wintertime and that your bills are higher than they need to be. You should always have someone come in to close up your fire places if you don’t intend to use them any time soon. If you think you may use them again in the future, make sure you find someone who can close them up so you may open them again when you wish to start using them again. Some ways of closing up fire places are permanent, so make sure you are specific about what you want done.

Overall, fire places can be great additions to the home, though most only use them once in a while. Safety is an important issue, as many lose their homes to fires because they did not care for them the right way. Always have the number of a good chimney sweep company on hand, and know what to look for if there may be problems. If smoke starts backing up into your home when you use them, you may have blockage that needs to be addressed immediately.

When I woke up this morning and flipped on the news, I realized the temperature had plummeted last night. It was now two degrees below zero. YIKES, that is frigid! I dreaded stepping outdoors to take my little girl to school. Thank God for forced gas heat and fireplaces. I knew the heat would be kicking-on all day long. Fortunately I had my fireplace cleaned and ready to go. The wood was stacked and the matches were close at-hand. Before I knew it, I was enjoying a cozy, blazing fire while I worked. Now I realize that a wood-burning fireplace is not for everyone. Luckily for those who have them, but don’t want them, there are fireplace gas logs. You can alter your wood-burning fireplace and turn it into a gas unit. Then you’ll be enjoying a hot fire at the mere flip of a switch.

I think it’s all the hassles. As far as wood-burning fireplaces go, I suppose people don’t care to deal with the mess anymore. That’s why they turn to fireplace gas logs. You see, with a wood-burning unit, you have a few chores to take care of each winter. First you have to purchase wood, unless you already have your own sources. Then comes the stacking just outside your home. Be sure to cover it with a durable tarp so it doesn’t get wet. Wet wood doesn’t burn well and it smokes like crazy. Next you’ll probably want a bin or stand to hold your wood near the fireplace. Keep it stacked daily. And then there’s the clean-up. It’s wise to keep the ashes scooped out of your fireplace on a regular basis. This makes it much simpler to build and light the next time around. So, there you have it. The burdens of a traditional fireplace. I’ll bet you can’t wait to get those fireplace gas logs now. Once the gas unit is fully set up, you only need the pilot light lit. From there on out, it’s all about convenience. Anyone in your home can start the fireplace, just like turning on a light.

Check your local vendors. From my experience, home superstores such as Lowe’s carry fireplace gas logs and electric fireplace units. Head on over to the one nearest you and find out what they charge. There will be an installation cost as well.

Filet mignon is, has always been, and will always be the supreme cut of beef, and one of the greatest foods in the world. Ever since I was a kid, I have associated this rare and delicious cut with the most special of occasions and the most formal of events. My parents, when they would take us out for a trip to the theater as children, would first bring us to an exclusive Italian Bistro. Several courses would be served, beginning with a light dish of pasta, A tray of delicious sliced meats and cheeses, some wonderful minestrone soup, and fresh-baked, piping hot bread. Although the individual offerings would vary from day-to-day, the main, and most sublime course would always remain the same. The filet mignon recipe was so good that none of us ever tried anything else. It was, in fact, the specialty of the house.

For many years, I was afraid to even experiment with filet mignon. It seemed too sublime and exalted a dish for my amateurish culinary pretensions. Nonetheless, one day curiosity finally got the best of me. I prepared a filet mignon blue cheese recipe, a variation of the steak I had never tried before. I figured that even if it was not very good, it would at least be unique enough to warrant my efforts. My attempt was not in vain. I was a natural! The fillet mignon was sublime – almost as good as what they would serve in the Italian restaurant. At that point, I realized that it was not just the expertise of the chef, but the wonderful quality of that cut of beef that made it taste so good.

What I didn’t know then is that filet mignon is not all of the same quality. I had yet to discover such things as aged beef, Kobe beef steaks, Grain fed organic steak, and all of the other innovations in preparing the perfect beef. Nowadays, I only use 100% hormone free grain fed cattle. I feel that if I’m going to make something as good as filet mignon, I probably shouldn’t compromise at all. Everything about it should be just perfect, otherwise there is no point. I’ve gotten to the point where I know a dozen different ways to make it, all of them tasting absolutely delicious. I’m glad that I was brave enough to cook it in the first place!.

Have you ever stopped to wonder why the settlers decided to stay in certain areas? I know I have. I live in Minnesota where the winters are freezing and the summers hot and humid. We do have thousands of lakes, ponds, streams and rivers that add to the beauty of the land, but we also have mosquitoes, ticks, gnats, deer flies, poison ivy and poison oak. It seems for every plus for living in the area is countered with a negative. It is hard to understand why my German immigrant grandparents decided to stay here. Whenever I bring this up my husband reminds me that we also chose to stay in the area.

There are times that I think we are crazy for living in such a harsh climate, but then again I think I would miss the changing of the seasons if I lived some where that is warm all the time. The summer heat bothers me more than the winter cold. In fact the winter months are my favorite. I love to cross country ski, snow shoe and ice fish. I also love putting on all the layers of clothing to go outside in the winter. Two years ago I bought a faux fur coat. I have always wanted a fur coat, but have not been able to afford one. You also have to be concerned about people confronting you for wearing fur. The faux fur coat is very warm. I have never owned a coat that could block out the cold the way this faux fur coat does.

In the past many of the faux fur coasts were poorly made so they would shed and also look matted in areas that were sat on or leaned against, like the buttock area and the elbows. Today faux fur is much higher quality and keeps looking good even after being dry cleaned. The coat I bought is reversible. One side has the faux fur and the other side is a water repellent fabric. This is a great feature because when if is snowing I can keep dry be turning the coat inside out. So far no animal rights person has confronted me about the coat. My sister had an animal rights person confront her about wearing leather. Leather is another favorite among Minnesotans because it blocks the wind and wears for many years. Last year there was an article that was being passed around that stated fake furs were made from domestic cats and dogs. I did some research into this and discovered that the information in the article was wrong; however there are now many people that are against faux fur. I wish some of the people that protest these things would put their energy into something that would have a more meaningful impact on society.

The older I get the more I wonder about who my ancestors were and where I came from. In a relatively culture free America, I wondered if there are traditions Albert that I identify with the deep down. Like many Americans my ancestors came from all over the globe. For all intents and purposes I am a European mutt. Even my last name is comprised of two different languages. In all this movement and mixing I have to wonder who I really am.

Thankfully I have more than one relative who is fascinated by genealogy. Several of my aunts have been studying records and building our family tree for several decades. Thanks to all of their work I can look back over many generations to see where my family came from and how they came to be in America. If you go back far enough you can even find a United States President in my family tree. No bragging intended, of course.

If you want to know more about your ancestors, building a family tree is a great way to get those answers. There are many public records available that can help you begin to build your family tree. Birth, death, and marriage records are a great place to start. You may even think about trying one of the many web sites out there that can help you build a family tree. Genealogy.com is one of the most popular sites for this purpose. You may be surprised that somebody else is already out there building the tree for you.

Other popular web sites include familytreemaker.com and ancestry.com. These web sites are used by millions of people trying to build their own family tree. They also contain an endless amount of records that you can pour through to see if your ancestors are included. You may even find a detailed family tree out there with your name on it.

Knowing who you are and where you came from can be an amazing gift. Many people do not know who their ancestors are and are unable to put together a complete ancestral history for themselves. Knowing how your family came to be in this country and where their ancestors lived before can open up a whole new world for you. We live in an amazing age of technology in which so much information is readily available for our use. Hopefully we can all use it to gain a better sense of who we really are and why.

Though most gifts go to one person, there are times when it is appropriate to get a gift for a collective group. That group is usually always a family. This might be appropriate when you are buying a housewarming gift, when a baby is born, or when you are sending something from far away. This type of gift might take some thought, but there are some great ideas that will be great for the entire clan. If you have your own family, you can think of what you may like to get when shopping for especially clever family gifts.

When a baby is born, everyone buys for the baby, but it is also nice to buy family gifts for everyone else. This means that no one, especially older children, feels left out. A great idea would be something that the family could use together. Think about buying them a stack of family games they can all play together. You might also want to get them gift certificates to the movies as family gifts or perhaps vouchers for a game of miniature golf. They may not get to use them right away, but they will love each of those. A gift certificate for any type of family venture is great, including meals out or tickets to a play may work as well.

When you want to get something for the family that enjoys doing many things outside, you can find some great family gifts along those lines. You could get them a set of outdoor travel chairs that they can use no matter where it is that they go. Family gifts like this might also be a family sized tent for camping, or perhaps outdoor games that the entire family can play together. If there are young children, however, you may want to refrain from games like lawn darts, which can be dangerous.

When living far away, it is often a bit easier to send family gifts rather than something for each person. That will take more thought, but there are some things that will work. Some families will appreciate a really great painting, but that won’t work for all families. You have to consider the personality of the family when shopping, and what they like to do in their spare time. Family gifts don’t have to be complicated, but you do have to put some thought into what they might like.

Kids are notoriously flighty, and there are always new trends coming and going. Nonetheless, there are some things that tap into childhood so effectively that they really stay there year after year. Face painting is definitely one of them. When people ask what I do for a living and I tell them that I paint faces, most of them are pretty surprised. Some of them are outright rude about it. They refuse to believe that you can make a living off face paints, but it is true.

I consider it an art more than a job. Painting faces is a fairly intricate skill. People ask for all kinds of different designs on their faces. Of course you get the requests for butterflies, flowers, bunnies, and things like that more often than anything else, but sometimes people want something more specific. You have to be able to do it all.

I first got involved in face painting when I was just a kid. I always got Halloween face paint kits. As a matter of fact, I wasn’t really interested in the costumes. My parents were always frustrated because they would get me an elaborate costume and all I would do is play with face makeup all night! Nevertheless, soon they saw that I really had a talent. I kept with it all through school. I even used my face painting in high school. Some of my friends were amateur movie makers, and I would do face painting for them. I could do it all – monster movie stuff, glamorous makeup, and of course the classic facepainting stuff that I do now.

When people see a face painting booth at the county fair, they don’t really think about it, but some people make their living off this. I am one of those folks. I make money at fairs, kids birthday parties, Halloween parties, and carnivals of all sorts. Sometimes people even hire me for custom face paint jobs for their own parties. I don’t make a lot of money doing it, but I do make enough. It is worth it because I get to do what I love. Few people really get to follow their passions in this life, so even though I have to get by on a shoestring budget from time to time, I consider it worth it. After all, it makes me happy. Isn’t that what life is all about?
