I’m curious as to how other disabled theatre people are making out. Please share your stories.
I might as well answer my own questions it’s only fair right.

When preparing for a show have you developed unique ways to get around your disability?

I sometimes bring crutches to rehearsal if I think my stump is going to cause me problems. Up until I started having problems with my stump I didn’t do anything unique.

Do you bring anything into the dressing room to help you out?

I always have: crutches, pain medication, extra stump socks, change of nylons, band aids ( incase of stump blisters) and sometimes WD40 ( incase I get squeaks)
and LOTS of water

how do you find playing able bodied characters? is it second nature to you or is it harder?
Most of the roles I play are able bodied characters. It isn’t that hard for me.
the only thing I worry about is my gate. I try hard not to limp.
some day I want to play a one legged character.
Do you feel you don’t get the roles you deserve because of your disability?

there was only one time I thought I lost a role because of my leg. It really bummed me out for a while but I got over it.

When you audition do you tell the director you’re disabled?

Most directors I work for know already. depending on the time of year the audition takes place and what I’m wearing they can usually see I wear and artificial leg.

Do you think your disability helps you as an actor or hinders you?

I think it helps me stay focused and work harder. I always have to pay attention to my movements to keep walking straight so it’s a good work out for the body and mind.

Any tips or lessons from the stage you care to share?

talk to the costume people to make sure you can move in your costume. Once I had to wear heals I wasn’t used to I went out to do my solo during dress and fell flat on my bum. now I practice in my shoes and they add straps to my shoes so they won’t slip on my foot.
I totally think more disabled actors and actresses should play disabled roles. But I’m asking about theatre productions, particularly local community theatre.

as a disabled parent I have experienced both parent & disabled “designated parking”. The one thing that both sides would agree,
a there is a real need to develop more “designated parking” spaces, and
b the authorities should be doing more to eradicate the abuse of “designated parking”

The great advantage of uniting our campaigns is that we create a large voice rather than two smaller voices. I am involved with a disabled group in east lothian who are making the abuse of designated parking our number1 issue this year, as are other groups arround the country. The media seems to be portraying this as a contest between the disabled and parent and toddlers, when in point of view we are after the same thing.

We should also be allowing, tobe parents and the tempory disabled into the “designated parking” debate.

Lets get a solid voice and not be divided. Divide and rule would suit the powers that be, it would allow them to do nothing apart from talk. What do you think?

I want to know if they can be because I read an article online called Gifted but Disabled and it sounds a lot like me. I have labeled as LD and my weaknesses are math and science but I am excellent in english, writing, and socail studies, unfortuneatly there are people saying that I am not gifted and they’re even sying that I can’t go to college and to be honest I’m kind of jealous of the people who have been labeled as gifted or been in talented and gifted programs so I need help! Is it possible for disabled people to be gifted and I can still be gifted even if I wasn’t labeled as it?

I am not talking about money or monthly benefits. I am talking about having a support group & counselors to assist those who are having trouble adjusting to life as a disabled person & things such as renters rights & daily living. Those of us with non-visable physical disabilites have no case managers or agencies to assist us with representation until we become severly disabled & depressed. Why is this?

What some may see as a “fully functioning” mind, the person who is dealing with a body & a mind that has been altered due to an injury might not feel the same about it. I was not complaining or asking for more. I was seeking assistence from others who have experience as a disabled person or with them. The medical doctors I have seen are just pill pushers & bigots. I won’t allow myself to become a test subject for drugs that will eventually render me a vegetable & a living body to try new surgical procedures on. I still have rights & I definately have my pride from the days that I was a “whole” person. What has Africa got to do with any of this? Go abuse them & see where it gets you. I doubt they’d be as civil about it.

I just tried to edit an answer on question about how to get a 9 month old puppy in from the cold. People that are disabled, and know that they can not do too much for a puppy, why do they get one then?? I am physically disabled, I have a service dog myself. I have even shown in AKC obedience with my forearm crutches, I have even fallen in the ring and gotten up again. If you let your physical disabilities limit you to the extent that you can not help your puppy, then you do not need a puppy period. There are some handlers on Yahoo Answers that know me and have seen me at dog shows. If I had to crawl out in the snow and cold weather to get a dog inside, I would!! So why is it that a disabled person would even get a puppy if they now say that they are too disabled to get the puppy in from the cold???!!
My disablility here is Lupus (SLE) and bilateral dropped feet from 2 back surgeries with several herniated discs in my back. There will come a day when I need to be in a wheelchair all the time. My dogs are all large dogs, German Shepherds.
There was an obedience show in Cincinatti last year that we all watched a woman go through Rally Advanced with her dog. She used one crutch and was so slow. The entire building was quiet, and I think that everyone was watching. She got a standing ovation coming out of the ring. She deserved it, her dog actually got the best score in the class and he deserved it as well!! I was in tears when she came out of the ring.
